About the Maurizio Anzeri – Acrobats
In collaboration with The Photographers’ Gallery, multi-media artist Maurizio Anzeri has created Acrobats, a new site-specific installation for Islington Square in the form of a theatrical tableau.
Working across photography, sculpture, drawing and installation and often using appliqué techniques such as embroidery and stitching to add additional layers of meaning to his pieces, Anzeri’s distinctive works offers a rich visual spectacle and dynamic platform for engagement.
Acrobats combines sculpture, found photographs and hanging fabrics to create a visual dialogue between shape and form; a highly choreographed moment in time. It was inspired by Islington’s rich cultural and performing arts heritage, as well as the work of the acclaimed German artist Oskar Schlemmer, best known for his ground-breaking work fusing visual arts and performance at the Bauhaus school.
